Speaker's Center

MicrophoneDedicated to improving speaking skills, the Department of Communication’s Public Speaking Center is staffed with Public Speaking Mentors who help guide students through the process of preparing and delivering oral presentations. Students taking any course  — not just a speech course — or any Faculty/Staff/alumni who need help with presentations are invited to visit the Center for help and guidance with their presentations.  Some quick tips can be found on this site.

Location: Strickler Hall lower level — Room LL021

Apprehensive?

Do you experience apprehension when getting ready to speak in front of others? Or even thinking about the possibility of having to speak in front of others? One the BEST methods for reducing this apprehension is to know your subject matter and to practice your speech.  A great place to do this is our Speaker’s Center. The assistants have all experienced those same feelings at some point in their speaking lives – so they have an idea of what you may be feeling. Come on down and let them help you start on your road to speaking success….

Check out their office hours and come on down – even if it's just to chat….

Hey everyone! My name is Riley Mullady. I’m currently a freshman communication major at UofL and a member of the Louisville Women’s soccer team. I graduated a semester early from Dublin Jerome High school (Columbus, Ohio) to begin my academic and athletic career at UofL. My main goal is to combine my admiration for sports and public speaking to become a sports broadcaster. I plan to help others acquire additional skills to elevate their speaking and writing. I hope I’m able to help you all in several aspects of communication!

Alyssa asay
Alyssa Asay

My name is Alyssa Asay. I’m a senior graduating in the spring of 2021. I fell in love with communication my freshman year of college after taking a 111 class and switched my major. I was a mentor for the Speakers Center  January 2020 – December 2020. I love helping with speeches and encouraging people to find confidence in their voices. After the experience of being a mentor and my interest in watching students become confident with their voices and create wonderful speeches I am taking on the role of Co-Coordinator for the Center. With my experience in navigating mentoring during the semesters of Covid-19, I plan on helping the Center continue to strengthen its presence as an online platform while also continuing to help students with their speeches as needed. I know your visits to the Speakers Center can help you become confident, competent communicators.

Katherine Taylor is faculty coordinator of the Speaker’s Center.
