Learning Outcomes

  • Become informed and critical users of mass media, particularly as they relate to African Americans
  • Develop an understanding of the historical evolution of African Americans from non-recognition to regulation (Clark, 1969) and from assimilationist texts to multiculturalist texts (Gray, 1995)
  • Develop and nurture a cultural approach to the study of media that can be used to analyze the portrayals of African Americans and their agency in these portrayals
  • Analyze the impact media have on perceptions, including African Americans’ understandings of themselves
  • Broaden perspectives on other minority (and majority) groups
